Check-in mode is picked per event and you can change it later from the edit form. There's no separate app to install — check-in runs entirely through the web scanner, in whatever browser your phone already has (Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android). Open it from Host → your event → Scan QR codes at the door (or Open check-in roster, depending on the mode).
QR ticket
Default the moment you set a price on an event (free events default to No check-in instead). Each attendee gets a QR code in their confirmation email.
- Scanning — aim your phone's camera at the code through the web scanner. No install, works in any modern mobile browser.
- Cash payers — the result card shows a Collect $X prompt (the exact amount, built from their ticket tier, add-ons, and any promo discount) before you can check them in.
- Walk-ins — someone with no RSVP can be added right from the scanner: name and an optional email, always cash, always one guest. They're confirmed and checked in the moment you add them, no ticket needed. For a specific payment method, extra guests, or add-ons, use the fuller walk-in form on the guest list instead — see Approving payments.
- Cancelled RSVP — the scanner blocks with RSVP cancelled and won't let that ticket in.
- Wrong-event ticket — the scanner tells you which event the ticket actually belongs to. If you host that other event too, you get a one-tap switch to its scanner; otherwise it's just a heads-up so you can point the attendee the right way.
- Notes — any note the attendee added (allergies, plus-ones, etc.) and any private note you added on the guest list both show on the result card.
- Rescans — scanning an already-checked-in ticket again shows an Undo option, so a wrong scan is easy to correct without leaving the sheet.
- Spotty signal — if the connection drops mid-scan, the check-in is queued on your phone and replayed automatically once you're back online; a badge shows how many are waiting to sync.
Roster
Every confirmed attendee shows up as a row at Host → your event → Open check-in roster. Tap a row to check someone in, tap again to undo. No QR is generated for roster-mode events — attendees just see that they're on the guest list from their My RSVPs page, not a ticket.
The full list and search load once when you open the page, so looking someone up keeps working even on bad venue wifi. Checking someone in is still a live write, though — unlike the QR scanner, roster taps aren't queued for a later retry, so if your connection actually drops mid-tap, refresh the page to confirm it saved.

No check-in
Nothing to do at the door — attendees just show up. Your event dashboard still shows live RSVP counts (confirmed, interested, waitlisted) even though there's no scan or tap tied to arrival.
Switching modes on an event that already has attendees
You can change check-in mode from the edit form at any time — there's no lock-out once RSVPs exist. What determines whether you're asked to notify attendees is simple: the event has at least one confirmed attendee, and the change involves QR mode on either end (switching to it or away from it). That check has no date component — it fires the same way whether the event is tomorrow or six months out. Switching between No check-in and Roster (neither end is QR) never prompts at all; it just saves.
Where the date does matter is which option is pre-selected in that prompt:

Downgrading away from QR defaults to skipping regardless of how close the event is — anyone who already has a ticket doesn't need a fresh email just because the door process changed. You can always flip the choice yourself before saving. If nobody's confirmed yet, you still get the quick confirm step showing the mode change, just without a notify choice — there's nobody to email.
